Maldivian human rights advocate Shahindha Ismail has been elected Secretary General of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH); one of the world’s oldest human rights organizations.
Founded 103 years ago and based in France, FIDH held its elections on Saturday, with 188 member organizations from 117 countries eligible to vote.
Shahindha, who resides abroad and previously led the now dissolved Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN), was elected alongside four other secretary generals.
In addition to Shahindha, who also formerly served as President of the Police Integrity Commission, the newly elected board includes a President, 15 Vice Presidents, and a Treasurer from various countries.
