President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed confidence that Maldives will be able to overcome its current economic challenges and achieve sustainable development.

Speaking at a meeting with Fuvahmulah residents last night, held at Fuvahmulah School, President Muizzu said the country’s economy had been in a “very fragile state” around two years ago.

He said that when his administration took office, the government was burdened with heavy debt and was “on the brink of bankruptcy.”

However, he said the government has since taken swift action to stabilize the situation and address the needs of the people.

“To date this year, the Maldives economy has been shaped in a way that paves the path to sustainable development, with significant efforts underway to fulfill the promises made to the people,” President Muizzu said.

The President reiterated that this year and the next will be the years when his pledges to the people will begin to materialize.

Describing the visit as a “new chapter” in Fuvahmulah’s development, President Muizzu said his trip was aimed at bringing real progress to the projects long desired by the city’s residents.

President Muizzu began his two-day official visit to Fuvahmulah and Addu Cities yesterday.

He visited Fuvahmulah first and is scheduled to travel to Addu City today, where he will visit Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo before proceeding to the city’s connected islands.

President Muizzu is also set to inaugurate several development projects and meet with residents during the visit.
