A memorial commemorating national hero Martyr Hussain Adam, who gave his life defending the country on November 3, has been inaugurated on his native island of Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi.
Hussain Adam was martyred 37 years ago, on 3 November 1988, during the attack on the capital carried out by H. Haajaraage Abdul Luthfee and a group of Maldivians working with Sri Lankan terrorists.
The memorial honours Adam’s bravery, courage and sacrifice. As the terrorists first attacked the military headquarters, he mounted a fierce defence from the main gate, holding off the attackers and giving soldiers inside time to prepare, Kulhudhuffushi City Council said.
On Victory Day, the memorial was officially inaugurated by Kulhudhuffushi Mayor Mohamed Athif in the early hours of 3 November.
Family members of Hussain Adam attended the ceremony.
A replica of the AK-47 rifle Adam carried while on duty at the army headquarters gate has been placed at the memorial. At just 20 years old, Adam continued to defend the headquarters until he ran out of ammunition and was killed in the attack.
