Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has launched an internal investigation following the overturning of a landing craft near its commercial port, an incident that claimed the lives of two employees.

MPL said in a statement that relevant departments are examining the incident and that further information will be released based on the findings.

The first victim, Masood Hossain, a Bangladeshi employee who joined MPL three years ago, died at the scene yesterday evening.

The second, Ali Aflah Abdulla from Dilbahaaruge, Gaafu Alifu Gemanafushi, passed away last night at IGMH while undergoing treatment. A family member said Aflah had been trapped beneath the vessel and succumbed to cardiac arrest during surgery.

Sources said the craft overturned after two highmarks aboard lost balance, and an attempt to stabilize it failed, causing Aflah to be trapped between the vessel and one of the highmarks.
