Stolen dollars from VIA still not found

A Police official told Mihaaru News today that while they have been working to find the money that was stolen on 27th October, they are yet to find it.

It has been confirmed that the money (USD) from the suitcase that was stolen from two BML employees mid-transport after being threatened by knives has not been found.

A Police official told Mihaaru News today that while they have been working to find the money that was stolen on 27th October, they are yet to locate it.

A total of USD 130,000 was in the suitcase.

The robbers threatened the BML employees with knives and took the cash-filled suitcase from the walkway between the old terminal and the new terminal. The suitcase contained dollars meant for issuance to local travelers headed abroad.

Police apprehended the four suspects at Kaafu Huraa, with the getaway speedboat having been found as well. They were remanded in custody yesterday pending trial.

As per a source from Huraa who had spoken to Mihaaru News, the masked robbers stole the money from the BML employees from Terminal 1, with them taking a 12 seater speedboat to Huraa that morning around 8:45 am. It is unclear as to where they had gone right after they left the airport.

The suspects conducted the robbery on 27th October, 5:00am.

The four who were arrested in connection to the dollar theft:

  • Ahmed Raihan Naeem, 20, M. Chorus, Malé
  • Ibrahim Anoof, 24, Alhivilaage, K. Guraidhoo
  • Hussain Shahudh, 30, Alhivilaage, K. Guraidhoo

The robbers had reportedly got to the terminal via a car. The suspects fled using a speedboat docked at the VIA jetty, according to a source. Another source shared that as they fled with the suitcase, the thieves had sprayed a substance in the faces of Aviation Security Command Officers at the scene and threatened them with knives, as well.
