The academic calendar has been digitized and uploaded to the Education Ministry's website for easier viewing.
The ministry's new website was created last year so that all school information can be found in one place, with the academic calendar being published as a PDF.
The newly published academic calendar now clearly separates school days, holidays, exam dates, and public holidays, making it much easier to view and plan accordingly.
Term dates can also be viewed separately.
As per the current academic calendar that has been published, schools will open on 27th January 2026. The mid term break will be from 24th May to 30th May. The first term break will be from 17th July to 1st August.
The second term will begin on 2nd August, with the mid term break being from 13th September to 19th September. The long holiday will be from 18th December 2026 to 12th January 2027.
In the next academic academic calendar, full days where teaching will be done in school and half-days are separated. Children's Day and Teacher's Day have been designated half-days as well.
Maldives has had the academic year begin in January for a long time. However, upon requests from various tourism industry parties and due to the complications of Covid-19, the government at the time decided to move the beginning of the academic year to August. This was done in 2021 where the academic timeline was changed from one year to a year and a half.
This was changed upon requests from parents, with the next academic year to begin in January, back to what it was.
