Former President Abdulla Yameen has declared that he is confident his name will appear on the ballot for the next presidential election, despite efforts to bring 'political charges' against him.
Yameen made these remarks during his speech at the People's National Front (PNF) Congress held at Artificial Beach last night.
He noted how various individuals within the government have claimed that his name will not be on the next election's ballot paper, citing corruption cases against him.
"But I am very sure about my case... yet [government supporters] keep asserting that President Yameen's name will not be on the ballot. If so, that vote paper will not be printed in the Maldives," Yameen said.
"God willing, President Yameen's name will be on the ballot," he stated.
In his speech, Yameen strongly criticized the parliament, independent institutions, and even the media, accusing the government of exerting influence over the entire system.
According to Yameen, the PNF emerged at a time when political leaders have failed and remain unable to advocate for public rights.
Yameen alleged that state funding to media outlets has compromised their independence, undermining the fourth pillar of democracy.
"Today marks the birth of a resilient and strong political party. This party will hold the government accountable, and will protect public interest to the highest degree," Yameen asserted.
Yameen alluded to his photo being featured in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's presidential campaign, contrasting it with his own approach, where he had campaigned independently, 'with no need to use the photo of another person', as he had been confident in his public support.
