Parliament has approved the appointment of Dr Aishath Rameela, a former minister, as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Rameela’s appointment follows the expiry of the term of current member Mariyam Muna on 30 November. Her name was the only one forwarded by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu from among the candidates who applied for the position.
The nomination, referred to the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee for review on 2 October, was approved with the unanimous vote of 63 members.
Rameela began her career as a nurse in 1990, has twice served as State Minister of Health and holds a PhD in Social Sciences from Malaysia, obtained in 2010.
She resigned as Minister of Agriculture in December last year, citing health reasons.
