President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated today that further population
consolidation in K. Thulusdhoo, an island already inhabited by people from
various other islands, will only proceed after securing housing for the
island's current residents.
Speaking during his visit to Thulusdhoo today, the final destination of his current
trip to several islands, the President announced that the next major project
for the island is the road construction project, which is expected to be
contracted out within the next month.
He noted that the construction of these roads is crucial for both the
current residents and those who migrate to the island.
The President said that the residents also desire the allocation of plots
from the reclaimed land to solve the island's housing crisis. He added that
plans are being made to address this issue in the coming days.
Acknowledging Thulusdhoo as a successful example of population
consolidation, the President stated that the government wishes to bring in
individuals who wish to migrate to Thulusdhoo, provided there is sufficient
space after the housing issue for the current residents has been resolved.
"This island has been successful in population and consolidation
efforts. And I know that in the coming days, this is an island with a
population that encourages and welcomes (such efforts)," the President
said while meeting with the residents.
President Muizzu emphasized that any future population consolidation
initiatives would be carried out in consultation with the people of Thulusdhoo.
"Beyond that, and provided there is space, we, God willing, want to
undertake further population and development consolidation projects on this
island. That will proceed according to the consultation and views of the
residents of this island."
Thulusdhoo, which has a thriving guesthouse business, is already home to
people who have migrated from other islands.
The President also announced plans for Thulusdhoo to include:
- Construction of a modern football stadium.
- Development of an additional jetty on the west side of the island.
- Establishment of a BML bank branch and a Dollar ATM.
