Parliament has today selected ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MP for Manadhoo constituency Husnee Mubarik to sit on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) as a member from the parliament.

Mubarik was nominated by Parliament's Majority Leader and PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falah. The 58 MPs in attendance today voted unanimously in favour of appointing Mubarik to the JSC.

Mubarik also serves as the Chair of the parliament's Judiciary Committee.

Mubarik is replacing Maafushi MP Hussain Riza, who resigned yesterday after having served as JSC President. Riza has not yet commented on his reasons for his abrupt resignation from the commission.

Meanwhile, a ceremony planned for last night at the Supreme Court to appoint judges to the Criminal Court and Magistrate Courts was also been cancelled.

Besides Riza, JSC Vice President High Court Judge Mohamed Niyaz also recently resigned. President's member to the commission Yazmeed Mohamed was appointed to replace him.

As JSC President, Riza has even recently spoken openly about the challenges faced by the Maldives' judicial system.
