Parliament has approved the appointment of former Civil Service Commission (CSC) member Mohamed Farshath as the President of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC).

Farshath’s appointment was passed with 49 votes in favour during today’s sitting.

The decision follows the Independent Institutions Committee’s review of all seven commission members, after which it recommended Farshath as the most qualified candidate for the post.

Farshath has previously served as Secretary General of the Maldives Media Council and held various government positions.

A Vice President will be elected by a vote among the members.

The MMBC comprises seven members-  three appointed by Parliament and four elected by the media. However, only four candidates applied for the media-elected seats: Abdul Aziz Ibrahim, Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed, Simaha Naseem and Hussain Sageef.

The three parliament appointees are Mohamed Farshath, former Broadcasting Commission President Sofa Shafeeq, and former member Aminath Sarahath Izzat.
