The consultancy work for the bridge planned to connect Hithadhoo, Hulhudhoo,
and Meedhoo in Addu has been awarded to a Chinese company today.
The agreement was signed with China's TY Lin International.
Minister of Construction Dr. Abdullah Muththalib signed the agreement on
behalf of the Ministry, while Mr. Chen Zixiu, the President of the Chinese
company, signed on behalf of TY Lin International.
The Ministry stated that the consultancy work for the Addu Bridge will
include surveys, design, and technical work related to the bridge.
The Hithadhoo-Hulhumeedhoo bridge will be the longest bridge ever
constructed in the Maldives. Its length is estimated to be between 13 and 15
kilometers. The first sea bridge built in the Maldives, Sinamalé Bridge, is 1.3
kilometers long. The currently planned bridge connecting Malé, Villingili,
Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi is 6.7 kilometers long.
As preparations begin to connect Hithadhoo and Hulhumeedhoo with a bridge,
former President Abdulla Yameen had also pledged to build a bridge in Addu
during his visit there for the 2018 Presidential Election campaign. Current
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu also announced that he would fulfill this promise
during his visit to Addu during the last Presidential Election. This promise
was the largest one he made to any area outside of Malé.
