There will be fireworks tonight at Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo in celebration of separating from the Addu Council after yesterday's referendum.
Yesterday's Addu Council referendum vote saw Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo back the split, with Feydhoo voting against it.
Meedhoo MP Abdul Rahman told Mihaaru News that a special fireworks event will be held in order to express his and Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid's gratitude to Hulhumeedhoo residents. The event will take place where both islands converge.
Abdul Rahman said that the fireworks show will take place along Hulhumeedhoo's harbor tonight at 8:30pm. MNDF has stated that fireworks will be lit for five minutes from 9:00pm onward.
An opinion poll was conducted on 9th October 2010 during former President Mohamed Nasheed's administration, in order to ascertain whether Addu's separated islands should be connected and formed as a city.
The results showed that residents of Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoofeydhoo and Hulhudhoo supported the formation of an Addu City Council. Residents of Feydhoo and Meedhoo advocated against the formation of a city council at the time, much like the recent referendum.
Yesterday's referendum saw 67 percent of Hulhudhoo voters vote for a separate council. 83 percent of Meedhoo voters voted in favor of a separate council. 73 percent of Feydhoo residents voted against the formation of a separate council.
The Addu referendum saw 616 people from Feydhoo vote in favor of a separate council, with 1,784 against. 723 people from Hulhudhoo voted in favor of a separate council, with 329 against. 847 people from Meedhoo voted in favor of a separate council, with 144 against.
