Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar has stated that he is deeply saddened by the results of yesterday's referendum, which sees Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo break away from the City Council to form their own separate councils.

In the same social media post, Nizar then stated that despite being saddened, he fully respects the decision of the people of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo.

Provisional results from yesterday's referendum indicate that Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo wish to form separate councils, while Feydhoo decided to remain within the Addu City Council.

Nizar expressed hope that yesterday's referendum would help resolve longstanding concerns and bring satisfaction to the residents of the two islands. His remarks may have referenced earlier grievances from some locals who felt the two islands had been neglected by the City Council.

Nizar praised the decision of the Feydhoo residents, describing it as visionary and vital for development and progress.

Nizar emphasized that brotherhood should be maintained between the islands of Addu, which should strive to work collaboratively towards its development.

In yesterday's referendum, 67 percent voters in Hulhudhoo, and 83 percent in Meedhoo, voted for the formation of a separate council. In Feydhoo, 73 percent of the votes were against splitting from the City Council.
