Police have decided not to conduct post mortems on the couple found deceased in a house in Hithadhoo, Addu on Wednesday. The bodies have been released to the family last night.
The couple who died in their residence near the Hithadhoo Tourism Zone have been identified as Ibrahim Abdulla, 60, Crane-ge, Hithadhoo, and Farahnaaz Rasheed, 52, Naares, Maradhoo.
It has been reported that previously, the plan had been to bring the bodies to Male' on a Maldivian Airline flight to have autopsies conducted. However, the family has now announced that their funerals will be held after Friday prayers today.
Ibrahim Abdulla's funeral is to be held at Masjid Al Thaqwa or Hussain Moosa Mosque in his island of origin, Hithadhoo. Farahnaaz's funeral will be at Maradhoo's Masjid Al Ikhlaas or Buruzu Mosque.
As per reports, Police had been discussing conducting post mortems on both. However, the family was against this, and wished to hold the funerals at the earliest.
Until a decision was reached, the bodies were kept at the mortuary at Addu Equatorial Hospital.
A source who had visited the house following the discovery of the bodies told Mihaaru News that the couple had been found deceased in a bathroom attached to a bedroom. Ibrahim Abdulla had sustained a head injury, and injuries were seen on Farahnaaz's body as well.
Police stated that they had found no indication of foul play during their investigation. The investigation will, however, continue, they said.
"It seems most likely that the man had been doing some work when he fell down, and the woman had bent down to assist him and both had gotten electrocuted. Their heads were touching when found. When we entered the house, the power had gone out," the visitor to the house said.
The couple had only moved to this residence a couple of days ago. The area is not yet equipped with electricity services, so they were using a small generator as a power source.
There is now speculation that the two may have passed away due to fumes from the generator. The generator was placed inside the residence, with witnesses saying the house did not have adequate ventilation.
