While 50 individuals applied for 20 leadership positions of the People's National Front (PNF), no others beside former President Abdulla Yameen applied for the post of party president.

PNF has previously announced that their internal elections to select leadership members will be held during the national council meeting scheduled for October 30.

As per this announcement, a party president and two vice presidents will be elected. Also up for election are the posts of Secretary General, Registrar and 14 members of the party senate.

In a post on X, senior PNF member former Technology Minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamal stated that as the deadline for application was reached at 6pm yesterday, 55 individuals had applied for the 20 positions.

Maleeh wrote that the large turnout of candidates reflects the party's growing appeal and the optimism surrounding its future.

The PNF was established by Yameen as a breakaway party following internal disputes within his former parties, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC), after both endorsed President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as their candidate in the last presidential election, which he won.

After Yameen left PPM, a significant number of party members shifted to PNC, and PPM was later dissolved.
