Maldives and China have signed a Letter of Exchange (LoE) to commence the design phase of the road development project in Malé and Villimalé, which will be carried out with Chinese assistance.

The LoE was signed on behalf of the Maldives by Minister of Housing Dr. Abdullah Muththalib, and on behalf of China by the country's Ambassador to the Maldives, King Xianhua.

The decision to develop the roads in Malé and Villimalé falls under the agreements signed during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to China and is part of the USD 130 million grant aid pledged by the Chinese government.

Both governments had previously announced that a significant portion of the grant aid provided by the Chinese government would be utilized for the road construction in Malé and Villimalé.

An LoE for the feasibility study of this project was signed with China in July of last year.
