The police have announced that a court has ordered the remand of a Maldivian
teacher for 30 days after he was arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a
student at her home.
The case, alleging that an individual in a position of trust sexually abused
a 13-year-old girl, was reported last Saturday. A 46-year-old man was arrested
in Hulhumalé in connection with the incident.
A police media official told Mihaaru News that when the man was presented
to the court for a remand hearing, the court ordered his detention for 30 days.
Mihaaru News has learned that the arrested individual is a male teacher
from a school in Malé. Although some sources familiar with the matter suggest
he visited the victim's house to conduct tuition classes, this has not been
officially confirmed.
It is unclear whether other people were present in the house when the
incident occurred.
However, it is understood that the girl's family reported the sexual abuse
to the police. Information indicates that the teacher had left the house when
the report was made, but he was subsequently stopped on the street and taken
into police custody.
