It has come to light that the Ministry of Social and Family Development visited the house of famous singer Mariyam Maeesha (Raalhu Mariyambu) over a child negligence report from an anonymous source. It is known that she is not married and has no children.
Maeesha told Mihaaru News today that the ministry had contacted her sister regarding the anonymous report that she was neglecting her two year old child.
"The ministry had contacted my sister and asked whether I had a two year old son with someone from another island. They said that they were calling to seize the child from me and to ask for my address," said Maeesha.
Maeesha thought that it was a prank call at first but had verified that the call was in fact from the ministry.
"I called the ministry afterwards. I explained to them what had happened, how much of a breach this was, how this is basically defamation and asked what exactly was going on. I said that there is such a huge gap in their system, where they are unclear who the parents of a child are, where the child is and contacting the wrong people where they had called my sister instead of me," said Maeesha.
Maeesha stated that she had not received any information aside from them saying they would look into it and get back to her.
Maeesha said that ministry officials had gone to her house after the call.
"They went to my house and said that an anonymous report was made to the island council stating that I have a child. This information went to the police, with them giving that information to the ministry, with the ministry saying they were investigating a report from the police," said Maeesha.
Maeesha said she had called the ministry and raised this issue to them afterwards.
She also said the ministry had called her sister and stated it was an error on their part and had apologized.
Maeesha said that due to this blunder from the ministry, the rumor that "she has a child out of wedlock" would spread, with her reputation being smeared. She stated that the ministry had called her and apologized but a simple apology would not end such a serious issue.
Maeesha stated that they had called her and asked for details about the child after they had apologized.
"I take issue with the fact that such a huge breach, such a wild accusation and such a waste of a citizen's time can occur from a taxpayers ministry such as this. This is quite a big issue," said Maeesha.
"By the time you get to someone's house, the birth certificate of the child should have already been crosschecked, correct?"
There was no response when Mihaaru News called the Ministry of Social and Family Development regarding this matter.
