Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions has interviewed all seven members of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) to elect a new president for the commission.
The matter was referred to the committee yesterday, and members questioned the candidates extensively about the implementation of the Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act. Committee members also asked how the commission intended to ensure that the law is enforced in a way that meets public expectations.
MMBC consists of seven members; three appointed by Parliament and four elected by the media.
However, when the commission was formed, only four candidates were nominated for the media elected seats. They are: Abdul Aziz Ibrahim, Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed, Simaha Naseem and Hussain Sageef.
The three members appointed by Parliament are former Civil Service Commission (CSC) member and former Media Council secretary general Mohamed Farshath, former Broadcasting Commission President Sofa Shafeeq, and former Broadcasting Commission member Aminath Sarahath Izzath.
