A Secretary General position was announced yesterday for the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC).
The announcement was published by the Civil Service Commission (CSC).
The basic requirement for the position is to have a degree in either Journalism, Broadcasting, Policy Making or Management or to have at least five years of experience in the field of media.
As per the announcement, those who apply need to be a Maldivian over 30 years of age. Individuals who are media representatives or editors will not be reviewed for the position.
The announcement states that along with a basic salary and living allowance, a total salary of MVR 35,500 has been established.
It has been made known that commission members will get a total salary of MVR 48,000 which includes basic salary and living allowance. The commission President will receive a total salary of MVR 59,000.
The MMBC will have a total of seven members, with three being appointed by Parliament, and four being elected via vote by the media. All seven members have now been appointed to the commission.
Parliament referred the appointment of a President for the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission to the Committee on Independent Institutions for review yesterday.
Parliament approved the appointment of three members: former member of the CSC and former Secretary General of the Media Council Mohamed Farshath, former President of the Broadcasting Commission Sofa Shafeeq and former member of the Broadcasting Commission Aiminath Sarahath Izzath.
Although the remaining four members were meant to be elected by media vote, the low number of applicants eliminated the need for an election, resulting in automatic selection. These four members are Zam'ath Ahmed Waheed and Abdul Azeez Ibrahim from the broadcasting sector and Hussain Sageef and Simaha Naseem from the online media sector.
