Fifteen projects in the Islamic sector, including mosques and Islamic centres will be completed before the start of next Ramadan, Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed told Parliament today.
Responding to a question from MDP Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, Minister Shaheem said the government was working very hard to ensure all projects were finished on schedule, noting that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu places great importance on Islamic sector development.
“More than MVR 170 million has been allocated to private sector companies over the past two years to complete these projects,” Shaheem said.
“God willing, 15 major projects will be completed before next Ramadan. These include mosques with a capacity of 500 people and Islamic centres with capacity for up to 700.”
The minister added that the Ministry of Islamic Affairs was also working to expand the network of Quran Centres across the country under a special policy announced by the president.
“We have already begun construction of new branches in several islands, and work will continue throughout the next year,” Shaheem said.
He added that teachers would be deployed to islands lacking qualified Quran instructors.
