President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the allowance granted to single parents will be raised from January 2026 onwards, at the rate of MVR 3000 per child.
Increasing the single parent allowance to a rate of MVR 3000 per child with a cap of MVR 12,000 is included in the President's manifesto as well.
Speaking in a gathering with residents of L. Gan last night as part of his ongoing visit to Laamu atoll, the President announced that funds for this initiative will be included in next year's budget.
At present, single parents receive MVR 2000 per month if they have one child. If they have more than one child, then they receive MVR 1000 per child.
The President stated that MVR 211 million will be included for this in the next year's budget. At present, there are 5,878 individuals on the single parents' register.
In addition to this, the President also introduced an allowance for Thalassemia patients. He announced that from January 2026 onwards, thalassemia patients will receive a monthly allowance of MVR 1000. For this, MVR 11.7 million will be allocated in next year's budget.
There are currently 982 children on the Thalassemia patients register.
Over the past month alone, 69 additional children were registered as being in the care of single parents. NSPA issued MVR 4.9 million for their care in August alone.
