Following the protest held by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Malé
on October 3, the police have summoned several party
members regarding certain allegations.
The individuals summoned for a police investigation include Fathimath
Zahiyya (Zaya), a member of the MDP National Council, and two other members.
The police had previously seized Zaya's phone.
In addition to Zaya, the other two general party members summoned to the
police are Mohamed Hamaid Abdul Ghanee and Aishath Najdha Ali.
The summons come after the arrest of six people during the MDP protest. The
Criminal Court recently released those individuals, who include former North Kulhudhuffushi MP Yasir Abdul Latheef, former Dhaandhoo MP Yaugoob
Abdulla, and Maafushi Council President Hassan Solah, after a 15-day period of
remand, with certain conditions.
While a criminal investigation is ongoing against some individuals related
to the MDP protest, the party is preparing to hold a major protest in Malé on November 17.
