Adhaalath Party President and former Home Minister, Imran Abdulla, stated
today that the Adhaalath Party spent the last two years respecting the people's
decision in the 2023 Presidential Election and formulating its political
strategy to avoid causing any difficulties for the government. However, he
declared that the party is now focused on getting the government back on track.
Imran, who has been abroad and away from political work since the end of
former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, said at an Adhaalath
Party press conference that the party's policy had been structured to ensure
that if the government governed in a way that benefited the people, there would
be no difficulties in implementing its policies. He added that closely
monitoring the government's performance and carrying out necessary work as a
political party was also a policy of Adhaalath.
"However, with the government nearing its two-year mark, when we look
at how the government is being run, it is very clear to us that today's
government lacks the policy capability to govern," Imran said.
He accused the government's policies of being incoherent and failing. He
stated that the government lacks sound economic judgment and is unwilling to
listen to anyone who does possess such judgment.
After reiterating many of the points raised by government critics, Imran
stated that the people are currently "furious."
"(Because the government is not paying for completed work) If company
owners are jailed for not paying GST or for issues related to expatriates
brought in on quotas, the Maldivian business community will not remain silent. The
people will step out to get these issues back on track," Imran stated.
He added that this effort has now begun and that the party will stand with
the people in this work. He also remarked that there is no point in having
people govern when the citizens are destitute and suffering.
"The people will come out to get these things back on track. That work
has now begun, and the people are pushing it forward strongly. God willing, we
are with you in that work," Imran said.
Imran's comments come after Adhaalath had previously announced its decision
to collaborate with the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
