President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to build a second airport in Laamu Atoll, saying it will be developed on the island that offers the greatest economic benefit and has multiple resorts nearby.
Speaking with residents of Laamu Maavah during his visit to the atoll this morning, President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling the promise of developing another airport in the atoll.
He said the project would be carried out in a “long-term and economically sustainable” manner, noting that the best way to boost tourism is by building airports close to areas with high resort potential.
“The best way to promote tourism is to build an airport near where many resorts can be developed. That’s my thinking on this matter,” he said during his second visit to Maavah since taking office.
While residents have previously campaigned for an airport near Maavah, the President said the specific island for the project has not yet been decided but would be announced soon.
During his visit, President Muizzu inaugurated a new road construction project and laid the foundation stone for a Bank of Maldives branch and a new police station in Maavah.
He also announced that the island’s reclamation project would help address housing challenges and include the development of a modern football stadium.
He also pledged to sign a new health centre project soon and revealed plans to expand the sea ambulance service next year, with Maavah serving as one of its operational bases.
