Residents of Gaafu Alif Dhevvadhoo have called for the tomb of Dhevvadhoo Rasgefaanu, Al-Sultan Mohamed Ibn Haji Ali Thukkalaa- one of the former kings of the Maldives to be transferred from the Friday Mosque in Male' to his birthplace, Dhevvadhoo.
The issue was raised in Parliament today by Gemanafushi MP Asadulla Shihab, during today's Parliament sitting in which Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer appeared to answer related questions. Dhevvadhoo falls within Asadulla’s constituency.
The MP said that since the king hailed from Dhevvadhoo, residents wished for his tomb to be moved to the island as a matter of cultural and historical significance. He asked whether there could be a provision allowing the relocation of the king’s tomb from the grounds of the Friday Mosque.
“I have to think about it,” the minister replied, noting that the matter would need consideration.
Dhevvadhoo King, known for his compassion toward the poor, passed away on the sixth day of Sha’ban in the year 1112. He was buried at the Friday Mosque in Male'.
Although not of royal lineage, Sultan Mohamed Ibn Haji Ali Thukkalaa ascended the throne following the death of King Sayyid, who left no male heir. Before becoming king, he served as a judge. His reign lasted from 1702 to 1711 AH, and the dynasty ended with his death as he had no sons.
