Several agricultural fields in Haa Dhaalu Atoll Kumundhoo were vandalized and severely damaged last night.
Kumundhoo Council Vice President Ali Anwar told Mihaaru News that three fields were discovered destroyed early this morning when farmers arrived after Fathis (dawn) prayers.
“Farmers usually go to their fields right after dawn prayers. That’s when they found out how extensive the damage was,” Anwar said.

The affected plots grew crops such as watermelon, brinjal, cucumber, melon, and lettuce. The most extensive damage was done to watermelon fields, with produce found crushed and scattered.
“Some fields had to discard two wheelbarrows full of watermelons. That’s how much damage there was,” Anwar said.
He added that equipment used to water the fields and agricultural chemicals were also destroyed. The incident has been reported to the police, although no suspects have been identified yet.
Anwar noted that while minor incidents of field damage have occurred in the past, this was by far the most severe case the island has seen.
