Police have said they are currently working on an application that will include the phone numbers and bank accounts of scammers.
While speaking at PSM's Raajje Miadhu program last Friday, Inspector of Police Azeef Abbas said that the application will show the phone numbers and bank accounts of scammers, along with information regarding phishing links and prompt messages.
He stated that if someone were to receive a scam call, the information will be logged into the application. Once the information has been confirmed, the information will be available to the public, said Azeef, along with hourly updates on the application.
"This will allow us to mitigate this issue quite a bit. If someone is suspicious that it is a scam call, they can search the number via the application, along with links," said Azeef.
Scammers have obtained millions of Rufiyaa by using various techniques.
Azeef said that once the information or number of a scam call is published, internet service providers need to take action. He also said that if there is a delay in action being taken, it will increase the number of scammed individuals.
Authorities stated that they have received complaints from the public due to investigations not moving forward after scam cases are submitted to them. And so, the application will be able to provide updates on such matters when it launches.
