The Fisheries Ministry has introduced a training program in order to boost interest in fisheries amongst the youth, with the program giving an allowance for those who will work in the industry under the program.
As per the gazetted announcement by the ministry, they have decided to introduce the Transforming Fisheries Sector in the South-West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives Project with the aid of the World Bank. Five youths will be trained via the program's first round.
Along with technical information, the program will give those that join the opportunity to partake in practical activities related to fisheries, as per the announcement.
The ministry stated that those who participate in the program will be able to learn from the best fishermen, and conduct fishing activities on the best skipjack tuna fishing vessels the nation has to offer.
The ministry said the training program will take place from November 2025 to January 2026. In that duration, a daily allowance will also be given to participants.
The deadline for participation has been set to 23rd October.
Conditions to join the program:
- Individual must be interested in the fisheries industry
- Individual must be less than 24 years old
- Individual must not currently be registered as a fisherman with the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources
