Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has once again ordered cafés to remove
the tables and chairs placed on the sidewalks of Hulhumalé streets.
In an announcement, HDC stated that despite being instructed
last August not to provide services by placing chairs and tables on Hulhumalé's
sidewalks and along the hedges, many cafés continue to do so.
HDC stressed that it is prohibited to use the sidewalks for commercial
purposes by placing tables and chairs in a manner that obstructs pedestrians.
The HDC announcement instructed that all tables and chairs placed on the
sidewalks must be removed before next Thursday.
HDC further noted that the presence of large, fast-growing trees within the
hedges in Hulhumalé complicates the drainage of rainwater from the roads,
leading to issues like flooding and damage to the road surface. Therefore, the
corporation has also ordered the removal of these trees.
The corporation's announcement stated that if the tables, chairs, and trees
planted in the hedges are not removed within the given deadline, HDC will
remove the items itself. HDC also warned that it will not be responsible for
any damage caused to these items during the removal process.
