Ibrahim Riffath, former Attorney General during the previous administration, has
been summoned to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The ACC has not yet disclosed the specific case for which Riffath was
summoned.
However, in connection with the corruption allegations surrounding the
compensation payment made to Swift Engineering during the last MDP
administration, the then Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer and the then Minister
of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail were also summoned by the ACC for
questioning as part of the investigation.
Furthermore, former Minister of Education Aishath Ali was also summoned to
the ACC sometime yesterday.
After being questioned for two hours for the commission's investigation,
Aishath Ali's lawyer, Ahmed Mauroof, stated upon leaving that the commission's
allegation involved a decision to award an "unjustified
compensation." However, he added that when questioned about which party
determined the compensation to be "unjustified," no specific details
were provided by the commission.
Mauroof explained that Aishath Ali participated in an advisory committee,
not a decision-making committee. He also said that the ACC did not question her
regarding the specific allegation of having awarded an unjustified
compensation.
While Fayyaz was summoned to the ACC this past Monday regarding the same
issue, the summons order stated that he is being accused of misusing his
official capacity as a member of the Dispute Resolution Committee in 2019 to
provide undue compensation to Swift Engineering, thereby securing an
unwarranted benefit for the company.
The ACC also alleges that this action circumvented a course of action that
would have benefited the state.
Regarding the summoning of these officials, former President Ibrahim Mohamed
Solih expressed concern on X, stating that it is a series of actions aimed at
intimidating MDP members by the government through political interference in
independent institutions.
