President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that a major project to establish inclusive classrooms for students with special needs will be included in next year’s budget.

Speaking during his visit to SHaviyani atoll Funadhoo, the President said MVR 3 billion will be allocated for new projects in 2026, with priority given to education and health sectors. Of this, MVR 500 million will be dedicated to education, including arrangements to ensure that children with special needs can study in schools across all islands.

President Muizzu criticised previous governments for not prioritising education for children with disabilities, saying his administration’s policy is to allow these children to study alongside their peers. Special classrooms have already been set up, and 80 teachers have been trained, with more training planned next year.

“There is no inclusivity in the education sector. Children with disabilities have not been given the attention they need,” he said, adding that every citizen should receive services fairly, without discrimination.

The President also noted that work has begun on the construction of a vocational high school, and efforts will be made to expand A-Level education next year.
