President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officially inaugurated a 30-tonne ice plant in Shaviyani atoll Funadhoo, during his visit to the atoll’s islands last night.
He was accompanied by Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam.
Addressing residents, the President said the facility; the first ice plant established under his government’s efforts to strengthen the fisheries sector will provide significant benefits to the local community.
The project was awarded to MIFCO in September last year. The ice plant has a production capacity of 30 tonnes and ice storage capacity of 50 tonnes.
Ministry of Fisheries said the plant will alleviate difficulties faced by northern fishermen and help fishing boats operate more efficiently.
In addition, the government is working to further develop the fishing industry, including expanding MIFCO’s capacity and providing additional services to fishermen.
