Parliament has approved the Maldives’ participation to the International Convention on the Prevention of Cybercrime.
The decision follows a report from the Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, which reviewed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s proposal on the matter.
The committee recommended joining the treaty, and the report was passed unanimously by 34 members.
The UN Convention on Cybercrime was adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2024, following its proposal to the UN in 2017 by Russia. The treaty aims to harmonize laws and strengthen international cooperation in combating cybercrime.
Under the treaty, member states are required to criminalize certain Internet-related harms, including IT fraud and unauthorized access to personal devices.
