Gahllaidhoo has been officially handed over to the Shaviyani Atoll Komandoo Council.

The island was handed over during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Shaviyani Atoll, where he met with residents of Komandoo on Tuesday.

The handover was carried out by Local Government Minister Adam Shareef at a ceremony held Tuesday night. Komandoo Council President Mohamed Sinaan accepted the island on behalf of the council.

President Muizzu said Komandoo should be developed across multiple sectors and highlighted that the government is committed to creating economic opportunities in the region.

He noted that Shaviyani Atoll currently lacks sufficient tourism development and that the government has provided various concessions to attract investors.

The President also said that, in addition to the existing airport in the atoll, the ongoing development of Bilehfahi, Komandoo, and Milandhoo airports will open more opportunities for tourism.

President Muizzu further revealed that Shaviyani atoll Fushifaru and Gonaafalhu and Kudalhaimendhoo (under closed bidding) have already been announced and awarded for tourism development.

The Ministry of Tourism has also re-announced the tender seeking a party to develop and operate a resort in Shaviyani Atoll Nalandhoo.

The President had earlier decided to hand over nearby lagoons to local councils to help generate sustainable economic benefits for their communities.
