One dead, two missing after landing craft capsizes

MNDF and Police are continuing search efforts for the two individuals still missing; one Indian national and one Sri Lankan national.

One of seven crew members aboard a landing craft has been found dead after the vessel capsized en route from Male' to Reethi Rah Resort.

Police said the deceased has been identified as Ahmed Shifan, 38, from GDh. Dhaandhoo, Sarusoonu. His body was recovered during search operations carried out jointly by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the police.

Three people were initially reported missing after the “Almark Fiya” capsized around midnight last night.

Two of them; a Sri Lankan and an Indian national remain missing as the search continues.

Police said two of the missing individuals were inside an excavator on board when the ship went down.

The landing craft was approximately 100 feet long, according to MNDF.

The incident occurred amid adverse weather conditions affecting much of the country.

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) issued a yellow alert from 4:30 am. to 8:30 am. for areas between Haa Alifu and Laamu atolls, and a white alert remains in effect until noon today.
