The welcome gate built in Sh. Milandhoo showcases the island residents' most
anticipated project: their airport. When President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu arrived
on the island yesterday, the children lined up to welcome him held drawings of the
airport.
For this island, with a population exceeding 2,000 people, the President's
biggest pledge during the presidential election was to make the airport requested by the residents, a reality. He reiterated this certainty during the campaign
for the parliamentary elections as well.
With the 100 percent assurance given to the people of Milandhoo, the
physical work on their long-awaited project commenced yesterday. Some residents
expressed great satisfaction, stating that the signing of the airport agreement
and the commencement of work were a huge relief.
They described the event as their island's "dream becoming a
reality."
The agreement for the airport, which will be constructed by Maldives
Airports Company Limited (MACL), was signed by its Managing Director, Ahmed
Shareef, and Finance Minister Moosa Zameer. Minister Zameer also officially
inaugurated the physical work.
With the addition of the Milandhoo airport, Shaviyani Atoll will have four
airports. These include the currently operating Funadhoo airport, the Bilehfahi
airport, and the Komandoo airport.
Regarding airport development across the Maldives, President Dr. Mohamed
Muizzu had previously stated that it is this administration's policy to ensure
that travel to every region can be accomplished within 30 minutes.
The President noted that while there is an airport in Funadhoo, which is
close to Milandhoo, it takes more than 30 minutes to reach it from islands like
Narudhoo and Feevah, which are part of the same atoll. Therefore, he
had previously stressed the necessity of building an airport in Milandhoo.
