President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has
today commenced the physical work of land reclamation and airport development
on Sh. Komandoo, fulfilling an electoral pledge.
During his ongoing tour of Shaviyani
Atoll, President Muizzu visited Komandoo as the final stop today, where the
land reclamation and airport development works were contracted to Maldives
Airports Company Limited (MACL).
The agreement for the airport
development on the island was signed on behalf of the government by Minister of
Finance, Moosa Zameer. Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, the Managing Director of MACL,
signed on behalf of the company.
Finance Minister Zameer inaugurated
the physical work of land reclamation required for the airport.
The construction of an airport near
Komandoo was a project previously intended to be undertaken during the
administrations of both former President Abdulla Yameen and former President
Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. However, the physical work for the project had not
commenced at that time.
Currently, the only airport in
Shaviyani Atoll is located in Funadhoo. With the commencement of work on
Bilehdhoo and Komandoo airports in line with the President's pledge, he has
also promised to develop an airport on Milandhoo in the same atoll.
