President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the Shaviyani Atoll Bilehfahi Airport project will be completed within two and a half years.

Speaking to residents of Bilehfahi during his visit to the island on Monday, the President said the project which is handed over to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is a major development for the entire atoll. MTCC will invest in, construct, and operate the airport.

The airport agreement was signed last evening, and reclamation work has already begun. The airport will span 36 hectares, President Muizzu said.

“The land will be reclaimed within eight months from today. All works will be completed and opened within two and a half years, [or] 30 months from today. Once reclamation is done, the rest of the works will move ahead at high speed,” said President Muizzu.

He assured that the pledges he makes during his visits to the islands will be fulfilled and that all projects will proceed without delay.

In addition to the airport, the President said:

  • Water and sewerage works in Bilehfahi will begin soon.
  • Road development will start once those works are complete.
  • Harbour reconstruction will commence in February after community consultations to ensure a permanent solution.
  • School construction has been handed over to MTCC.
  • Health centre services will be expanded to 16 hours.
  • A new mosque will be inaugurated this month.
  • Waste management services will be assigned.
  • Handball and volleyball courts will be included in next year’s budget, while construction of a football stadium will begin this year.

President Muizzu began his tour of Shaviyani Atoll on Monday morning and is scheduled to visit 14 islands before the trip concludes on Thursday.
