This year's Bar Exam has been held yesterday with 136 candidates.

With this year's candidates, a total of 641 candidates have now set for the annual Bar Exams, which were introduced in 2022.

The Bar Exam is designed to evaluate whether law graduates are equipped to practice in the Maldives, with assessments focused on basic competencies to determine the minimum benchmark.

This year's exam included  120 multiple choice questions in both Dhivehi and English on six main areas: Contract Law and Practice, Criminal Law and Procedure, Land Law and Practice, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Tort Law and Maldivian legal system.

The syllabus for the Bar Exam is set by the Committee of Experts which consists of legal experts, law professors, and judges, the Bar Council said.

In preparation for the Bar Exam each year, the Bar Council publishes a reading list, conduct an orientation session and host lectures on areas covered in the syllabus. This year, too, participants had access to recorded lectures and lectures on areas newly added to the syllabus.

These lectures are then available on the Bar Council's YouTube channel for reference by those in the legal practice.

The Bar Council added that a sample paper featuring questions from the six syllabus areas is available on their website.
