Maldives Police Service has assured tonight that digital devices seized for investigative purposes are handled in line with international standards, and that there is no possibility of data breaches from such devices.

Last Thursday, Police seized the phone of young political activist Aishath Shimon on accusation that she had threatened President Dr Mohamed Muizzu through a post on social media platform X.

After the phone was seized, a new account emerged on X calling itself 'Shimon's phone', which has posted a photo of her.

Shimon alleges that this photo was leaked by Police, who have seized her phone.

Police released a statement responding to these accusations, where they stated that all evidence seized under investigations, including digital devices, are handled in line with policies established following international standards.

The devices and all data stored therein are protected under these policies, Police assured, asserting that there is no possibility of data leaks from such seized devices.

They denied allegations that videos and photos were leaked from a seized device.

Police affirmed that investigations are conducted with the highest level of professionalism and in full compliance with the law, ensuring all evidence remains secure.

The service places the highest priority on respecting human rights and maintaining professional standards, the statement reads.
