The Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has issued a warning that flats allocated to the most vulnerable citizens under the Gedhoruveriya social housing project will be confiscated if recipients breach their agreements by renting them out.
This warning follows the recent start of the flat handover in Hulhumale Phase 2.
Already, some recipients have advertised their newly-acquired units for rent, despite a clause in the agreement with the FDC expressly prohibiting rental.

FDC Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel confirmed on X today that because these are social housing units intended for people in dire need of shelter, the corporation will take decisive action.
"If the flats are rented out against the agreement, the tenants will be traced and the agreements signed with them will be canceled, and the flats will be confiscated," he stated.
Public concern is mounting, with many calling for the immediate cancellation of some allocations due to these rental announcements.
A three-bedroom flat has been advertised for MVR 25,000, a significant MVR 13,500 more than the government-fixed rent of MVR 11,500.
The FDC recently began handing over keys for the 4,000 flats, starting with the 14th tower of Amaan Udhares in Hulhumale Phase 2.
As of Thursday, the FDC told Mihaaru News that 78 recipients have received their keys, and the respective towers now have water and electricity services.
