Birds and fish at the Duck Park in Addu Hulhudhoo have reportedly been poisoned.
The park, which was built two years ago by the people of Hulhudhoo and the Addu City Council, has seen the deaths of ducks and other species of birds. Fish in the park's waters have also died.

Hulhudhoo Councilor Hussain Faiz Rahman told Mihaaru today that the deaths of birds and fish in the park have been noticed for several days. While the exact cause remains unknown, it is suspected that someone poisoned the water, he said.
"It seems that someone put something in the water. It's not just the ducks that died. Some of the naturally occurring animals there are also dead," he stated.

He added that both the native fish and the fish introduced into the water have died and risen to the surface.
Faiz said the park is open to the public and is visited by many people daily. He emphasized that the place was built through the hard work of the people of Hulhudhoo, who continue to maintain it themselves.
“It was naturally a pond there; we’ve cleaned it up and built it with benches and a platform for people to go and sit on,” he explained.
The case has now been reported to the police for investigation, he confirmed.
The incident follows a separate fire that damaged the Mathikilhi Eco Garden in Addu on Saturday and Tuesday. Eighty percent of the mangrove area is believed to have been destroyed in those fires.
