An advertisement has been circulating where Amaan Udhares Tower 14 flats have already been advertised with pictures and put up for MVR 25,000 in rent while the flats are still being given out to residents.
Two weeks have passed since Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) have begun handing out the keys for the 4,000 flats.
FDC told Mihaaru News yesterday that keys have been given to 78 people. as water and electricity have already been connected.
Renting out the flats is against the agreement between the FDC and flat recipients, stating that the flats can be repossessed.
This housing scheme was opened to provide housing for those in need, with people advertising flats at exorbitant rent rates regardless of this fact.
Zamzam Farish had expressed concern regarding the hasty advertising, posting about the matter on Facebook.
Farish stated that giving people an opportunity to use an unfair advantage to become wealthy deprives the poor of their basic rights. Farish also expressed concern over the fact that the rent rates are at three times the amount compared to the government's figures.
As per the Gedhoruveriya Project, three-bedroom apartments have a rent amount of MVR 11,500 per month. However, the advertised rent rates have an extra MVR 13,500.
"It would have been fine if they were charging the rent at a cheaper rate. However, it's three times the amount announced by the government at MVR 25,000.
The housing project was handed over to two Indian companies, with the two-room apartments being given for MVR 7,000, along with a MVR 1,000 monthly maintenance fee, totaling MVR 8,000. Three-room apartments are being given for MVR 9,500, with a maintenance fee of MVR 1,500, totaling MVR 11,500. These rates are cheaper compared to Male's rent prices for two and three room apartments.
The Fahi flats that are being advertised do not mention that fact, while charging three to four times the actual rent amount. It is known that it is the Fahi flat once they are called and asked.
Along with the Fahi flats, the Hiya flats and Vinares flats are also being advertised with exorbitant rent rates. While the Hiya flats rent, along with the maintenance fee have been lowered to MVR 4,984, some people are charging MVR 15,000 and MVR 18,000.
No action has been taken against those who refuse to pay rent to the government and against those who are renting out the aforementioned flats at exorbitant rates, flats that were built to help those who had to pay Male' rent rates and live in poverty.
