Police have told Shuaib Ali to present himself at their headquarters after they had faced criticism for not taking action against Shuaib, who posted online that protesters at the MDP rally that was held last Friday night “should be beaten down and shot if they do not abide by the agreed upon guidelines of the rally.”
The criticism comes amid reports that the police seized the phone of MDP National Assembly member Fathimath Zahiyya (Zaya) over a social media post that said, "I have begun making pepper spray out of Kandoodhoo chili for the protest on 17th October. If I get sprayed, they get sprayed."
While the police are being criticized for discriminatory actions regarding both the aforementioned instances, they told the media today that they are in the preliminary stages of gathering information regarding Shuaib's post. No other details were given.
Shuaib posted on Facebook last night that the police had contacted him, telling him to go to the Galolhu Police Station.
"As I am living outside of Male', I received news that an alternate method is being devised in taking my statement," said Shuaib.
In his defense, Shuaib said that in an attempt to be accountable, he is preparing all necessary information, with details pointing to his Facebook posts being disseminated after being altered or taken out of context.
"No one is above the law. Action must be taken after a matter has been looked into, even if it's me. I am now waiting for the police to call me," said Shuaib last night.
