A member representing fishermen has been appointed to the board of the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).

The Privatization and Corporation Board (PCB) announced on social media that this appointment, made to expand the role of fishermen in running MIFCO, was a decision by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Reesham Mohamed Shareef of Rihiveli, GDh. Thinadhoo, a fisherman, was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors.

This appointment fulfills an earlier promise by President Muizzu to empower fishermen to have a direct say in MIFCO's development, policy formulation, and program implementation.

MIFCO, previously a subsidiary of the STO, was converted into a 100 percent government-owned company in December 2023.

Accordingly, public nominations for the position were first opened on December 28, 2023; however, due to a lack of candidates, the announcement had to be made several times thereafter.
