The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has initiated an internal investigation following the disappearance of over 13.6 million cigarettes seized by Customs in April of last year from the MPL Hulhumalé port.

In a statement, MPL confirmed that the Police are also investigating the disappearance of the two containers of tobacco from their Hulhumalé port facility. The company stated that because the case is under police investigation, no further details can be shared publicly at this time.

"Also, for the information of the media, the relevant departments of MPL are also conducting an internal investigation into the matter," the statement added. MPL assured it will take all necessary action based on the findings of its investigation report.

It has been reported that the missing cigarettes were imported under the name of the Saudi Binladin Group. The entire shipment comprised 1,360 cigarette cases inside two 40-foot containers, totaling 13,600,000 cigarettes, representing a loss of over MVR 100 million in potential import duty for the state.

A senior Customs official explained that all products remain at the port under MPL's custody until the required documents are procured, noting that keeping items under investigation at the port is standard practice.

"The investigation is still ongoing. Some of it has been brought to the PG's attention," the official said, confirming that the cigarette containers were discovered missing early last night, prompting an immediate launch of an investigation into the incident.
