The new terminal at Hanimaadhoo International Airport will be officially inaugurated on November 9, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced.

MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed told Mihaaru News that final preparations for the opening are underway.

Operations will, however, shift to the new terminal earlier this month as the existing terminal must be demolished to fully utilize the newly developed runway.

“We will begin operations from the new terminal this month, and the old terminal will then be demolished,” Shareef said.

MACL held a meeting with stakeholders on Sunday to share information on the upcoming terminal opening.

The Hanimaadhoo Airport project; financed through an Indian line of credit and developed by Kalpataru Projects — is one of the largest airport infrastructure projects in Maldives.

It includes a 2.7 km runway, a new terminal capable of handling 1.3 million passengers annually, an air traffic control tower, cargo facilities, and a fuel farm.

The USD 136 million (MVR 2 billion) project is part of India’s USD 800 million Exim Bank line of credit and was launched under the government of former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
