Police seize Shiman’s phone over alleged threat to President Muizzu

Criminal Court also ordered Shiman to provide police with passwords and patterns required to examine data on her phone.

Police have seized the phone of opposition activist Aishath Shiman Ahmed in connection with an alleged social media post threatening President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

According to police, the phone was confiscated under a court order issued last night.

The warrant authorized police to search Shiman’s phone to gather evidence related to a comment allegedly made on X, on 20 September, which was deemed to contain a death threat against the President.

Criminal Court also ordered Shiman to provide police with passwords and patterns required to examine data on her phone.

Shiman was previously arrested during youth protests in Male' on 18 April, held after the fall of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, who fell from H. Fentenoy to the roof of H. Mitaazge in Male'.

She was charged with obstructing a law enforcement officer but was later offered an advisory agreement by the Prosecutor General’s Office, allowing for release without prosecution.
